Football Round-Up: Dutch go down
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Goran Sorloth scored with a fierce, long-range shot late in the second half when the European Group Two match seemed headed for a 1-1 stalemate after two goals in the opening 10 minutes.
Without Ruud Gullit but otherwise at full strength, the Dutch, favourites to reach the World Cup finals with England from a group also comprising San Marino, Poland and Turkey, started badly.
The Ajax defender, Danny Blind tripped Jahn-Ivar Jakobsen when he was clear inside the box in the ninth minute and Kjetil Rekdal coolly slotted home the penalty, sending goalkeeper Stanley Menzo the wrong way. Immediately, Dennis Bergkamp dribbled into the area at the other end and delicately placed an equaliser past the diving goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt. 'The Dutch were good, but they met a system they don't face elsewhere,' said Norway's coach Egil Olsen, referring to his 4-5-1 ploy.
Elswehere in England's group, the Polish defender, Tomasz Waldoch, scored in the 33rd minute to give his country a 1-0 victory over Turkey in Poznan.
Czechoslovakia needed to score three times in the last five minutes to overcome the Faroe Islands 4-0 in a World Cup Group Four qualifier in Kosice yesterday. Czechoslovakia replace Wales in third on goal difference. Wales, who beat the Faroes 6-0 in Cardiff a fortnight ago, will have been encouraged by the Czechoslovaks' inability to brush the minnows earlier and more convincingly.
