From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

CHESTER FACE an inquiry by the Football Association after Chris Foy, a Merseyside referee, was attacked by an irate supporter during their 2-0 home defeat against Rochdale yesterday. Foy was attacked minutes after sending off the young Chester defender Darren Moss for a second bookable offence.

The fan grabbed the referee around the neck, dragging him to the ground. But police were quickly on the scene and led the man off the pitch.

Wigan retained their position at the top of the Second Division despite conceding a late equaliser at home to Cambridge. The Lancashire side went ahead through their former Manchester United trainee, Pat McGibbon, three minutes into the second half. But Cambridge fought back well and John Taylor equalised in the 77th minute.

Burnley could not take advantage of their local rivals' slip-up, falling to their first defeat of the season at Bristol Rovers. Jamie Cureton's 37th minute penalty proved decisive.

Ian Lawson hit a hat-trick as Bury coasted to a 5-2 win over Colchester. Adrian Littlejohn and Andy Preece were Bury's other scorers, with Colchester replying through Richard Wilkins and Lomano Lua-Lua.

Guy Ipoua put Scunthorpe ahead against Cardiff at Ninian Park before Jamie Hughes' late goal rescued a point for the Welshmen.
