From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Borussia Dortmund 2 Rangers 2

Paul Gascoigne was sent off last night in freezing Dortmund as Rangers salvaged a draw. Gascoigne was shown the red card after 75 minutes after collecting two bookings.

Gascoigne, who heard earlier that he would not face police action after his involvement in some unpleasant incidents in a game against Aberdeen, became the third Rangers player to be dismissed in the Champions' League this season. He is already out of Rangers' next two League games because of a domestic suspension.

"It's something the player himself will have to look at," Walter Smith, the Rangers manager, said, "because it's happening too many times."

Gordon Durie celebrated his 30th birthday by scoring the 84th-minute equaliser. Brian Laudrup had put Rangers in front with his first European goal for the club in the 10th minute, before Andreas Moller and Karlheinz Riedle scored for Dortmund.

It was a 32nd-minute foul on Moller which earned Gascoigne his first booking then, in the 75th minute, he collected his second yellow card, this time for dissent. Rangers also had Charlie Miller booked as they completed their campaign with a shocking disciplinary record which has seen six players collect suspensions.

Rangers could hardly believe that Dortmund - one of the richest clubs in Europe - did not have undersoil heating; but Uefa officials and the referee passed the rock-hard pitch playable after a brief inspection in the morning.

Dortmund, already through to the quarter-finals along with Juventus from Group C, decided not to risk several of their first-choice players.

Rangers made the better start as Gascoigne displayed his skills. He split the defence in the 10th minute with a diagonal pass to find Miller, who skilfully set up Laudrup to score.

Six minutes later, Dortmund equalised as Moller fired in a tremendous volley from the edge of the box. Rangers fell 2-1 behind three minutes after the break. Patrik Berger's cross was poorly cleared by Gary Bollan and Riedle had plenty of time to score.

Durie's equaliser, driven in from a suspiciously offside position came after Laudrup's cross had been knocked on by Stuart McCall.

"We are not satisfied with what we have done," Smith said. "It's been a difficult tournament for us this season. We might have acquitted ourselves better without a number of injuries."

Borussia Dortmund: Klos; Reinhardt, Kree, Freund, Franck, Berger, Wolgers, Zorc, Riedle (Kutowski, 65), Moller, Herrlich.

Rangers: Goram; Cleland (Durrant, 78), Robertson, Gough, McLaren, Bollan, Miller (McCoist, 82), Gascoigne, Durie, McCall, Laudrup.

Referee: M Diaz Vega (Spain).
