The Elland Road manager, David O'Leary, has put in his increased offer and hopes to get permission to talk to Ward over the weekend. The money may be too good for Barnsley to refuse - although a deal could end their promotion hopes. They signed Ward from Derby less than a year ago for pounds 1.5m.
Paul Ince has been fined pounds 1,500 by the Football Association for his V- sign after being sent off during England's Euro 2000 qualifier in Sweden in September, but has escaped a further ban on top of the three-game suspension he already faces. The Liverpool midfielder was found guilty of misconduct by an FA disciplinary commission yesterday.
Gerard Houllier, Liverpool's joint manager, described Ince's fine as "silly" and added: "The worst thing for a player is being banned. What is the point in fining him too?"
France, the World Cup holders, confirmed yesterday that they will meet England in a friendly at Wembley on 10 February next year.
Rangers yesterday completed the signing of Newcastle United's World Cup- winning striker Stephane Guivarc'h for pounds 3.5m. The Frenchman joined the Magpies in June for the same amount from Auxerre, but could not establish himself in the first team.
