Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Swansea City emerged as favourites to reach the Third Division play-off final after holding Chester to a stalemate in an ill-tempered semi-final first leg at the Deva Stadium yesterday.
Nine players were shown yellow cards as nerves seemed to get the better of both teams. Goalscoring opportunities were few and far between as both defences remained comfortably in control.
Chester did manage to get the ball into the Swansea net, but David Flitcroft's effort was ruled out for offside. Ten minutes from the end Andy Milner squandered the home side's best chance of a goal when he failed to connect as he tried to convert Flitcroft's cross.
Swansea's best effort came as early as the fourth minute, when Jonathan Coates had a weak shot easily saved by the Chester goalkeeper, Ronnie Sinclair.
The Chester manager, Kevin Ratcliffe, still has high hopes of reaching Wembley. "We're confident of winning because we can always score away from home," he said.
However, on this evidence Jan Molby's side look the better bet for the final as they prepare for Wednesday's second leg at the Vetch Field.
