At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Yugoslavia win 12-1 on aggregate
While Yugoslavia confirmed their place in the World Cup finals with an easy victory over Hungary, the party in Belgrade was soured for Aston Villa's Savo Milosevic.
Four goals from Real Madrid's Predrag Mijatovic sent Yugoslavia to France, but Milosevic, who scored the game's first, was taunted throughout by Red Star Belgrade supporters. Milosevic, who played for Red Star's local rivals Partizan before his move to Villa, was substituted on the hour and as he approached the tunnel he gestured to the Red Star fans.
"Rivalry between Red Star and Partizan supporters is acceptable at a derby game," Milosevic said. "But when the national team is playing everyone should be behind the team and players, regardless of their club background."
He also said he wants to leave Villa, being "fed up with the football and life in England", and has been valued by the club at pounds 5m, with inquiries from Benfica and Borussia Dortmund.
Zeljko Petrovic, who came on for Milosevic, received a death threat before the game because he had played for a club in pre-war Croatia.
Goals: Milosevic (17) 1-0; Mijatovic (44) 2-0; Mijatovic pen (45) 3-0; Mijatovic (71) 4-0; Mijatovic (88).
