FOOTBALL : Jones pays the price
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Vinnie Jones, who has brought a new meaning to the expression paying through the nose in the last fortnight, learned of another cost yesterday when he was left out of Wimbledon's FA Cup replay against Liverpool at Selhurst Park tonight, writes Guy Hodgson.
Jones was suspended for three matches by his manager, Joe Kinnear, after he admitted biting the nose of a journalist and he now finds his hold on a first-team place has become as fragile as his reputation.
Kinnear, satisfied with his team's 2-1 win against their possible quarter- final opponents, Tottenham Hotspur, said: "He's paid his debt and it's up to him to force his way back in."
Jones retorted: "I've recovered from the problems I've had and said my regrets. Now I just want to get back to playing and enjoying football."
Liverpool are likely to include Neil Ruddock, who missed Saturday's 2- 1 win over Sheffield Wednesday with a suspension. Their goalkeeper, David James, will also play after recovering from knee and thigh injuries.
