Football: Jackson sinks old employers

DARREN JACKSON scored against his first former club as Hibernian made a determined start in conditions which wiped out most of the Scottish programme.

Jackson started and finished the move which stung his old employers, finding Keith Wright with a high ball. He then ran on, as Wright headed down, to fire a superb drive into the top right-hand corner, leaving Alan Main clawing at the air.

The Tayside men struggled to find a response and what chances they created were squandered until suddenly they were level in the 36th minute. The goal came from a quick free-kick taken by Jim McInally who the ball wide for Duncan Ferguson to chase. He hit the by-line and pulled the ball back to McInally whose pinpoint header found the bottom corner.

The remaining nine minutes of the half were all United: they were denied a goal for offside when Ferguson netted; Maurice Malpas went close; Ferguson shot wide and Neil Orr had to head off his line in the dying seconds. United could not maintain the momentum and their decline was largely due to the taming of Ferguson, their most effective player, before the break.

In an end-to-end second half, Hibs' winning goal was scrappy but well-deserved. Jackson was again United's undoing. His cross seemed too deep, but Micky Weir headed back across goal and as Wright looked for the final touch, Freddie van der Hoorn stabbed the ball past his own goalkeeper into the net.
