From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

BRUCE GROBBELAAR'S dream of playing in the World Cup finals may yet come true after he played a major part in keeping his country, Zimbabwe, in the tournament yesterday.

Grobbelaar had needed a brain scan after being struck by missiles thrown from the crowd when Egypt beat Zimbabwe in an African qualifier in Cairo in February. At Fifa's command, the match was replayed in Lyons, France, yesterday - and Zimbabwe progressed at Egypt's expense after a 0-0 draw, in which the Liverpool goalkeeper made several fine saves.

Zimbabwe, who also included Coventry's Peter Ndlovu, join Cameroon and Guinea in Group Two of the second qualifying round - with the winners going to the finals next year. 'This means a lot to me,' Grobbelaar said. 'We are a small country with no money, but now we have a good chance of making it to America.'

Ndlovu's club colleague, Mick Quinn, has had his red card against Manchester United on Monday expunged from the records. He was sent off after clashing with Peter Schmeichel, but Rodger Gifford, the referee, has changed his mind about the incident after watching it on video.
