BARRY FRY, the manager of Third Division Barnet, was a relieved man last night, after his first-team squad settled their wages dispute with Stan Flashman, the club chairman. Fry can continue with his pre-season planning - without the threat of having to recruit a new team.

'The players had a meeting with the chairman this morning and resolved all their differences,' Fry said. Twenty players had handed in transfer requests earlier this week, after finding a shortfall in their wage packets.

Sunderland's fans will be able to watch their team take on Tottenham on 5 August for nothing. The Wearside town was elevated to city status this year, and admission to the friendly against Spurs will be free to mark the event - at a cost of about pounds 250,000 to Sunderland. The Roker Park club expect to add midfield player Shaun Cunnington to their squad today, after Grimsby accepted an increased offer of pounds 650,000.

Paul Lake, who has been out of action for almost two years with a knee injury, returns to the Manchester City squad for a tournament in Dublin this weekend.
