Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.THE FIGURE on the right of each match is The Independent's rating for each result (see panel for explanation as to how the points are awarded).

THE RATINGS EXPLAINED
The Independent's rating system gives points (see table below) for each England result according to the quality of the opposition and the venue. We have placed opponents in four different categories: 1 The teams which finished in the top eight in the previous World Cup. 2 The next eight teams in the previous World Cup. 3 Every other country except those we classified as "minnows". 4 Minnows.
To acknowledge the achievement of reaching the finals of either the European Championship or the World Cup - and in order to recognise the importance of matches played at this level - we have given a 5-point bonus for each match played at this stage of those two competitions.
For example, England's defeat at home to France (a top-eight side) last month is given a rating of -2 points. England's opening match in last year's World Cup, a victory over Tunisia (a middle order side), at a neutral venue, is given a rating of 9 points (4 for the win plus 5 for being a World Cup finals match).
