Poborsky scored the winning goal four minutes from full-time as Benfica gained a 2-1 win over Campomaiorense in the Portuguese League. Benfica were outplayed for long periods but Souness, sacked by Torino earlier in the season, was delighted with the result. "We are certainly a better side now," he said.
The top two Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona, both lost away, stopping the chase for the championship from becoming a two-horse race. The leaders, Real Madrid, always faced a difficult trip to Real Sociedad, who have not lost a match at home in the league this season and were beaten 4-2. Barcelona then lost 3-1 at Deportivo La Coruna, with Djalminha scoring a fine clinching goal.
Zinedine Zidane, with two goals in the last 20 minutes of a 3-1 win over Atalanta yesterday, lifted Juventus to the top of Italy's Serie A, after Internazionale were held 1-1 at Empoli.
Zidane headed his first less than a minute after the visitor's Nicola Caccia had equalised Antonio Conte's 64th-minute opener. The midfielder's second came in injury time - a fierce strike from outside the area.
Inter needed a spectacular 81st-minute goal from Alvaro Recoba to avoid their second successive league defeat, after Carmine Esposito had given lowly Empoli a third-minute lead.
