Lazio may have lost Paul Gascoigne, but they still have Giuseppe Signori. He scored his third hat-trick of the season to earn the Rome club a 3-1 victory over Atalanta. That moved them into fourth place behind Sampdoria, who drew 1-1 with Genoa. Signori now has 20 goals in 21 games.
A remarkable 1-0 defeat for Benfica against Salgueiros, whose goal was scored by Sa Pinto four minutes from time on Saturday, enabled Sporting Lisbon to join them at the top of the Portuguese league. Sporting easily disposed of Boavista's challenge yesterday, scoring their goals in the first half of a 3-1 win as they stepped up their pursuit of a first title for 12 years. The title probably will be decided when Sporting play Benfica in May.
