Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

6 min: Johnsen brings down Jancker on the edge of the penalty area for the game's first free-kick and Basler's low drive curves round the end of the wall and past Schmeichel.

8 min: Zickler creates another worrying moment in the United defence, getting away from Stam to meet Basler's cross but putting his shot off target.

14 min: Gary Neville's long throw starts a scramble in the Bayern area with the ball eventually ricocheting out off Cole as United's first hint of a chance comes and goes.

20 min: Yorke flicks on Beckham's cross to threaten Kahn's goal, but the Bayern keeper manages to claw it away.

28 min: Matthaus makes long run out of defence and sets up a shot from Zickler, but it goes tamely wide of Schmeichel's post.

30 min: Beckham's corner, United's sixth to none for Bayern at that stage, eludes everyone as it goes across a crowded Bayern six-yard box.

36 min: Basler and the dangerous Zickler combine to earn Bayern's first corner, but Babbel is penalised for pushing when the ball comes over.

46 min: Matthaus's ball allows Jancker to outpace Johnsen but Schmeichel forces him wide and concedes the corner.

53 min: Babbel almost gets the telling touch with his head to Basler's corner as Bayern continue to look marginally the more dangerous.

55 min: United's best chance yet as the previously anonymous Blomqvist gets a boot to Giggs' cross. He cannot control it and it goes over the bar.

59 min: First yellow card of the night as Tarnat and Effenberg slide in on the surging Giggs.

63 min: Basler creates a scare with a 45-yard lob that beats Schmeichel but also just clears the bar.

65 min: United make the obvious substitution, their FA Cup final hero Sheringham coming into the action in place of Blomqvist.

70 min: Bayern also make their first change, bringing on the experienced international midfield player Scholl in place of Zickler.

78 min: Basler's run at the United defence sets up Scholl for a lovely chip that beats the leaping Schmeichel but comes back off the post.

79 min: Butt hits the ball across the face of goal and United bring on Solskjaer for the ineffective Cole.

81 min: Solskjaer's first touch is a flying header which draws his best save yet from Kahn.

82 min: Scholl threatens again, racing through on goal for a shot that Schmeichel has to dive full length to keep out.

83 min: Bayern are even closer to a second goal when Jancker's overhead kick hits the crossbar and bounces to safety.

86 min: Solskjaer's backheel gives Sheringham United's first clear chance to take the game into sudden death but his shot is saved.

87 min: Neville's cross sees Yorke miskick with a clear sight of goal before Solskjaer also demands a save.

90 min: Beckham's corner is only part cleared, Giggs plays it back in and Sheringham gets just enough of a boot to it to steer in inside the post.

92 min: Another corner with 30 seconds of added time remaining, Sheringham nodding on and Solskjaer volleying into the top corner.
