Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Trond EGIL Soltvedt scored his first goal for Coventry to earn his side their second victory of the season at Highfield Road. The Norwegian midfielder scored after 65 minutes to break Southampton's resistance. Until then the visitors had withstood everything Coventry had thrown at them and Dion Dublin missed several times, including a header which hit the woodwork.

Southampton should have scored after six minutes when Kevin Richardson played in Mickey Evans, but Steve Ogrizovic saved with a leg. A minute later, Coventry went close when Dublin glanced John Salako's left-wing cross wide. Dublin was not far away with another header two minutes later, this time from Paul Telfer's cross.

The Southampton goalkeeper Paul Jones denied Gary McAllister after 13 minutes following a fine run by Darren Huckerby. A minute later Dublin fired a bullet header just past the post. After 21 minutes Salako curled in a cross towards Dublin at the back post but he acrobatically hooked the ball wide.

After 23 minutes, Huckerby cut into the box and found Dublin, who was tackled by Ken Monkou, when the ball fell to McAllister. His shot was blocked, however, as was his attempt from the rebound, before Lee Todd put the ball out for a corner.

Fifteen seconds after half-time, Jones touched Soltvedt's 18 yard effort over the bar and from McAllister's corner, Dublin headed against the angle of upright and crossbar. After 47 minutes the outstanding Telfer shot over from the edge of the area. Telfer again let loose in the 57th minute from the corner of the box, but his shot was saved by Jones.

Then came the breakthrough. Dublin flicked on Roland Nilsson's cross into the path of Soltvedt and the Norwegian sold a dummy to Monkou before scoring from 12 yards out.
