Paul Lake, Manchester City's former Young England player, has been awarded a testimonial match against the Premiership champions, Manchester United, next season. Lake, now 28, has been forced to retire from playing because of a knee injury and is now working in the Maine Road medical department.

Tosh McKinlay, the Scottish international defender, has signed a new two-year contract to remain with Celtic. The 32-year-old McKinlay, who was a target of Wolves, admitted that the news had come as a surprise. "I thought a deal had been struck for me to go to Wolves when I met our general manager Jock Brown on Sunday, but I was given an offer I could not refuse and I am delighted to stay here," he said.

Derek Mountfield, the former Everton, Aston Villa and Wolves player, has joined Hereford, who were relegated to the GM Vauxhall Conference last season.

Ian MacColl, the former Rangers midfielder, has been appointed the new player-coach of Clydebank, the Scottisgh Second Division club.
