FIFA 11 has notched 11 billion games played, said FIFA 12's senior producer, but if that's the case then why upgrade when last year's model is going cheap?

An exhaustive list of new features and improvements together create reason enough, according to Senior Producer David Rutter, who presented FIFA 12 at Gamescom in Germany on August 16.

The new player impact engine combines with a true injury system that will force genuine squad selection dilemmas, while players are to behave with greater authenticity thanks to an AI system that brings out the very best in stars like Rooney and Kaka.

Its online mode is to make friendly games easier to organize, while matches involving the wider FIFA community will be more relevant thanks to the EA Sports Football Club.

Weekly challenges will be inspired by real world footballing events, and while the Football Club will "make every game relevant," the @EASportsFIFA reassured Twitter users that bad sports won't profit from quitting games early.

FIFA Ultimate Team, EA Sports' spin on the traditional sticker album, makes a return and this time is included on FIFA 12's game disc rather than as an extra download.

That's good news for collectaholics and great news for Electronic Arts' specialist division, which averaged $51 extra income per paying player of FIFA 11 Ultimate Team.

A demo is due September 13, with the game itself two weeks later.

Its great competitor, Pro Evolution Soccer 2012, comes out the same day as FIFA 12 in North America. Those in European regions will need to wait another fortnight for it to appear locally.
