Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Fellow, the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner of 1994, has been retired. Francois Doumen, his trainer, made the decision in collaboration with the gelding's owner, the Marquesa de Moratalla, after his charge was pulled up in Sunday's Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, at Auteuil.
Doumen said that it was a very difficult decision but that since he has already lost two of his three leading chasers, Ucello II & Ubu III, both killed in action in the last six months, he would not forgive himself if anything happened to his third "muskateer".
"It's the end of an era and it leaves a real lump in my throat." Doumen said.
Oliver Sherwood yesterday confirmed that he will be training horses for the leading jumps owners Bill and Shirley Robins for the first time in the 1995/6 season.
"I don't know which ones or how many but it is always nice to get good, young horses and I am looking forward to it."
The Robins have been looking for a new trainer since they decided to remove their string from David Nicholson.
Nicholson has trained most of their jumpers since the start of the 1992/3 season, in which the Robins finished runners-up in the National Hunt owners' table.
