The Fellow, the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner of 1994, has been retired. Francois Doumen, his trainer, made the decision in collaboration with the gelding's owner, the Marquesa de Moratalla, after his charge was pulled up in Sunday's Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, at Auteuil.

Doumen said that it was a very difficult decision but that since he has already lost two of his three leading chasers, Ucello II & Ubu III, both killed in action in the last six months, he would not forgive himself if anything happened to his third "muskateer".

"It's the end of an era and it leaves a real lump in my throat." Doumen said.

Oliver Sherwood yesterday confirmed that he will be training horses for the leading jumps owners Bill and Shirley Robins for the first time in the 1995/6 season.

"I don't know which ones or how many but it is always nice to get good, young horses and I am looking forward to it."

The Robins have been looking for a new trainer since they decided to remove their string from David Nicholson.

Nicholson has trained most of their jumpers since the start of the 1992/3 season, in which the Robins finished runners-up in the National Hunt owners' table.
