Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

TWO goals by the Bulgarian, Hristo Stoichkov, helped Barcelona, the Spanish League leaders, to a 4-0 win over lowly Cadiz yesterday, while Real Madrid dropped to fourth following a 2-0 defeat at Rayo Vallecano.

Real's reverse to the Madrid minnows was the shock of the day. 'This is a historic day for Rayo Vallecano,' their emotional chairman, Jose-Maria Ruiz Mateos, said. Pedro Riesco and Anton Polster scored for the hosts.

Deportivo La Coruna, fortunately playing away from their smoke-ravaged Galician home, beat Logrones 3-0 with goals from Claudio Barragan (two) and the Brazilian Bebeto.

Tanju Colak, Europe's leading scorer in the 1987-88 season, put himself on course for a Turkey recall with six goals in Fenerbahce's 7-1 win over Karsiyaka yesterday. Fenerbahce are now third in the Turkish league, two points behind the leaders, Kocaelispor.

In Germany, a Lothar Matthaus equaliser saved the Bundesliga leaders, Bayern Munich, from defeat for the second week in a row.

Uwe Weggman's second goal put VfL Bochum 2-1 up with 20 minutes left but the Germany captain rescued Bayern a minute from the end. Eintracht Frankfurt beat Kaiserslautern 2-0 with goals from Uwe Rahn and Dietmar Roth to move within a point of the leaders.

Paris St Germain went back to the top of the French league by hammering Bordeaux 5-0 while their rivals Nantes were held to a

1-1 draw at Valenciennes.
