England on the Waugh path in India : Hockey
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Bill Waugh, deputising for the injured Kalbir Takher at centre- half, scored twice as England beat Poland 4-1 and won their first game in the Indira Gandhi Tournament in New Delhi yesterday. They now play Malaysia, who yesterday beat South Africa 4-3, in the 5/6th place game tomorrow.
A goal down after 16 minutes when Marian Kubisiak beat Dave Luckes at a penalty corner, England lifted their game and were on terms within two minutes - Bobby Crutchley scoring from their second corner. A few minutes later, a strong run by Ben Sharpe down the right wing produced a cross from which Waugh rammed home his first for a 2-1 interval lead.
England continued to dominate after the interval with Nick Conway following up at a penalty corner to score his first international goal and then Sharpe, combining well with Guy Fordham, producing another cross for Waugh to collect his second in the 50th minute.
Australia will be without the centre-forward Matthew Smith for today's semi final against India. Smith has been suspended after being sent off in their last game against South Africa.
Warwick, from the DTZ Midland League, visit First Division Guildford tomorrow in the fifth round of the HA Cup, looking to extend their remarkable cup form. Playing in their 10th cup game of the season and with the scalp of First Division Trojans in the last round, they are hoping for another major upset.
The player-manager, Bob Ellis, said they were looking forward to the challenge: "The game is to be enjoyed and the pressure will be on Guildford. If we can produce our best form there could be an upset."
n Richard Dodds, the captain of Great Britain's Olympic gold medal team in Seoul, has succeeded Phil Appleyard as chairman of the Great Britain Men's Board.
