Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The team
Once one of Europe's joke sides (twice beaten 8-0 by England in the 1980s), Turkey have been transformed in the last three years under Fatih Terim. They beat both Switzerland and Sweden in the qualifiers as individual eccentricity has been replaced by focused teamwork. Not bad for a country who lost all six of their Euro 92 qualifiers. Key striker Hakan Sukur failed with Torino last year, but is still a first choice for his country.
The coach
Fatih Terim spent 13 years as a defender with Galatasaray and won a Turkish record of 51 caps. He became coach of Turkey's Under-21 side in 1990 and was promoted to the senior side in 1993, but will quit the job to succeed Graeme Souness as coach of Galatasaray next season.
