The Ineos rider’s season was scuppered by the serious incident at the Criterium du Dauphine where he crashed into a wall at 50km/hr during a training ride.
He was treated in intensive care in St Etienne before eventually returning home to the UK to recuperate, meaning he missed out on challenging for a fifth yellow jersey at the Tour de France.
On Saturday, Froome posted a picture on social media smiling in a hospital bed with the thumb on his left hand bandaged.
“Stupidly cut my thumb with a kitchen knife and had to have surgery to put the tendon back together last night. Stuck giving a thumbs up for a couple of weeks,” he tweeted. ”This is not my year. Can’t wait for 2020.”
