Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

'WHEN they are good,' said a Yorkshireman talking of his team this season, 'they are very, very good; but when they are bad, they are horrid.' Whatever disappointments the Tykes have had this summer, they will take cheer from a season in which Essex, Hampshire, Somerset and now Lancashire have been beaten. This was Yorkshire's first victory on this ground since 1978.
Lancashire made a fair attempt to make 334 and at 200 for 4 on a blameless pitch they seemed to be on their way. Yorkshire, too, were weakened as Peter Hartley had a stomach upset and could play only a restricted role and Phil Carrick, at 41, was in his first Championship match of the season.
The onus for winning the match thus fell on Mark Robinson and Darren Gough, and neither failed. Robinson upset a well-set overnight pair by having Nick Speak caught down the leg side and John Crawley leg before four overs later.
That left Neil Fairbrother and the middle order. Martyn Moxon took a gamble in offering Carrick's spin to the Lancashire captain and it worked. He failed to make contact with two swings and was bowled in a third attempt. With 134 needed, Mike Watkinson and Wasim Akram were capable of winning the match on their own but Moxon, who led Yorkshire well, brought back Robinson and with the first ball of his second spell he caused Watkinson to play on.
Wasim lifted Carrick for six and four but at 264, attempting to pull, he dragged a ball from Robinson on to his stumps. Although Phillip DeFreitas resisted for 24 overs for 27 runs, both he and Warren Hegg were dismissed by Hartley.
Peter Martin edged two fours off Hartley, to cheers from a good last-day crowd of 2,000, and just when every Yorkshireman on the ground was pleading with Moxon to take the new ball, Gough removed Glen Chapple. Robinson finished with 6 for 62.
Yorkshire may be without Richie Richardson for a fortnight after he damaged a finger taking a catch on Saturday.
