Your support makes all the difference.There was a neat symmetry to Yorkshire's first win over Hampshire in six years. It was Matthew Hoggard who started it all and he also wrapped it up shortly after lunch yesterday.
It took just 17 deliveries with the new ball to polish off the last three Hampshire batsmen. Hoggard finished with figures of 2 for 40 off 16.5 overs, giving him a match haul of 8 for 97.
"It was a massive team effort," he said. "The most important thing was the win to get Yorkshire off and running in the Championship. I've set off well and now I have to keep it up and put pressure on the England selectors."
Hoggard has been omitted from the team to play Derbyshire in the Friends Provident Trophy at Headingley today. "Having the day off suits me," he said. "I have to concentrate on the four-day game and getting back my Test place."
Hampshire did manage to put up some resistance, Michael Brown's six-hour vigil ending on 81, with supporting roles from Nic Pothas and Dimitri Mascarenhas.
It took the home side most of the morning session to take a wicket after Hampshire made slow but steady progress towards wiping out the 239-run first-innings deficit.
Deon Kruis made the initial breakthrough, bowling Pothas off an inside edge to end a stand of 74 for the fifth wicket with Brown. Just before lunch, the admirable Ajmal Shahzad got rid of Brown, snapped up at slip by Jacques Rudolph – one of four catches for the South African. Then Hoggard stepped up with the new ball.
