Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Here was an opportunity for Michael Vaughan to deliver a statement of intent a couple of weeks ahead of the opening Test, or else for Ryan Sidebottom to lead a rout of his former county, or maybe for Stuart Broad, on his Championship debut for Nottinghamshire, to reaffirm his emergence as an international bowler.
In the event, none of those things happened. Vaughan built a solid platform but threw it away, Sidebottom bowled superbly but ended wicketless, and Broad claimed Vaughan's wicket – and a couple of others besides – but was unimpressive.
Yet it was an engaging day for all of that, Jacques Rudolph rescuing Yorkshire with a fine unbeaten 104 before Graeme Swann, the off-spinner, seized the initiative with four wickets in the final session.
Vaughan went for 42, having looked comfortable until he fell into a simple trap set by Broad. The 21-year-old watched Vaughan ping a loose, leg-side ball for six, moved a fielder to where the ball had gone and was delighted when a similar delivery elicited much the same shot and Samit Patel took the catch.
Yorkshire then slumped to 111-5 before, aided by Gerard Brophy's 63, Rudolph organised a solid fightback in the afternoon, surviving a testing passage against an unlucky Sidebottom with the new ball.
After Brophy departed none of Rudolph's tail-end partners could master the craft of Swann, who finished with four for 25 from 16 overs, before Matthew Hoggard dismissed Will Jefferson with the day's last ball.
