Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Shane Warne's three wickets inspired his Hampshire team to a hard-fought 31-run victory over Essex in Division One of the National League yesterday.

The leg-spinner had figures of 3 for 21 as Essex managed only 153 all out off 43.1 overs in reply to the hosts' 184 for 7.

Matthew Elliott led Glamorgan to an eight-wicket victory over Gloucestershire at Bristol.

The Victorian left-hander shared an opening stand of 98 with Robert Croft (56) and finished with an unbeaten 91 as the Welshmen bettered a target of 213 for 8 with almost eight overs to spare.

Lancashire had to dig deep against Kent to edge home by three wickets in the closest finish of the day, at Old Trafford.

Mal Loye and Iain Sutcliffe gave Lightning a 93-run stand in pursuit of 203 all out. But Lancashire had to bat right down the order to prevail by three wickets with only four balls remaining.

In Division Two, Russell Warren (81) and David Hussey (87no) led the way as Nottinghamshire inflicted a heavy defeat on Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.

The pair shared a 106-run fourth-wicket stand in a total of 291 for six, while Phoenix were 187 all out in only 34.4 overs.

Worcestershire were indebted to captain Ben Smith (77) and Graeme Hick (63) for the addition of 96 runs together on the way to 239 for five - and a 21-run victory - against Sussex.

Hasan Adnan (50no) hit a half-century as Derbyshire got the better of Durham by six wickets at the County Ground, the Dynamos' 207 all out proving to be a winning total.

There was no way back, though, for Scotland after Leicestershire's attack scuttled them for only 86 in 37.4 overs at Grace Road. The home side then wasted little time knocking off the runs in under 20 overs for the loss of only Darren Stevens.
