From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

James Tredwell took five wickets as England A recovered from a difficult morning session in their Duleep Trophy match against East Zone.

The former India opener Shiv Sunder Das and Mani Dhoni put on 93 for the first wicket but the tourists hit back to reduce the home side to 283 for 9 at the close. Das was unbeaten on 124 at the end of the first day, but only Dhoni offered any steady support with 52.

Dhoni was the first to fall when he was removed by Yorkshire's Steve Kirby, who joined the tour this week as a replacement for Simon Jones. Graham Napier then claimed two wickets in quick succession but it was Kent's Tredwell who did most of the damage, ending the day with figures of 5 for 101 from 24 overs.

* The England captain, Alistair Cook, hit 87 runs in Dhaka yesterday to steer his team to a five-run win over Pakistan in their final super league match of the Under-19 World Cup. Sent in to bat, England were all out for 196 in 50 overs, with Riaz Afridi taking 5 for 42. England will now play the West Indies on Tuesday for a place in the final.
