From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Jofra Archer has been left out of England's team for the first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston.

The Sussex seamer, who starred as England lifted the World Cup earlier this month, was part of the initial 14-man selection but captain Joe Root has confirmed that Warwickshire's Chris Woakes has instead been preferred on his home ground alongside James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Root will bat at three, as was revealed earlier in the week, as England look to arrest their slump with the bat with Surrey teammates Rory Burns and Jason Roy set to open.

Joe Denly will bat at four with reinstated vice-captain Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali rounding out the side.

Sam Curran and Olly Stone are the other two to miss out alongside Archer.

The five-match series begins on Thursday morning.

England team for first Ashes Test:

Rory Burns, Jason Roy, Joe Root (c), Joe Denly, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.
