Your support makes all the difference.There was a neat bit of symmetry to Yorkshire’s first win over Hampshire in six years – it was Matthew Hoggard who started it all and it was the same bowler who wrapped it all up shortly after lunch today.
It took just 17 deliveries with the new ball for the Yorkshire attack to polish off the last three Hampshire batsmen. Hoggard led the way accounting for Chris Tremlett and last man Shane Bond, with Deon Kruis claiming the scalp of Greg Lamb in between.
Hoggard finished with impressive figures of 2-40 off 16.5 overs, which brought his match haul to 8-97.
“It was a massive team effort,” said Hoggard, modestly shrugging off his contribution. “The most important thing was the win to get Yorkshire off and running in the Championship.
“I’ve set off well and now I have to keep it up and put pressure on the England selectors.” As far as his fitness goes Hoggard said he had recovered from a sore neck. “Everything is fine and dandy.”
Hoggard has been omitted from the Yorkshire team that plays Derbyshire in the Friends Provident Trophy at Headingley tomorrow but he said: “There’s quite a few seamers here and all-rounders and my strike rate with the bat is probably not quite good enough. But having the day off suits me. I have to concentrate on the four-day game and getting back my test place.”
Hampshire did manage to put up some resistance most notably through Michael Brown’s six hour vigil for 81, with shorter, supporting roles from Nic Pothas and Dimitri Mascarenhas.
It took the home side most of the morning session to make a breakthrough after Hampshire made slow but steady progress towards wiping out the 239-run first innings deficit.
Kruis made the initial breakthrough bowling Pothas off an inside edge to end a stand of 74 for the fifth wicket with Brown. Then, shortly before lunch, the admirable Ajmal Shahzad got rid of Brown, who was snapped up at slip by Jacques Rudolph – one of four catches for the South African.
Once the new ball was taken Hoggard stepped up and Yorkshire were presented with the ideal start to their Championship campaign.
