Tea Report: Yorkshire 299 v Nottinghamshire 233-5 (87 overs)

Again the balance of this match is shifting - it's just a pity that the time lost to the weather on the opening day, combined with the slow rate at which Yorkshire made their first-innings runs, tends to diminish the prospect of one side or the other finding a way to win.

If it was Yorkshire's morning, it has been Nottinghamshire's afternoon, the visitors following the lead of the home side in the middle session on Thursday by staging an impressive comeback. If anything, theirs has eaten away at Yorkshire's erstwhile position of strength even more effectively.

With 147 runs added in 34 and a half overs between the intervals, this has been comfortably the most productive session of the contest. What's more, Nottinghamshire have lost only one wicket, when Mark Wagh, having battled to 56 in just over two and a half hours, square drove Darren Gough straight into the hands of Adil Rashid at point.

At 115-5 with Wagh's dismissal, Nottinghamshire looked to be in trouble, even at risk of failing to reach the follow-on target. With captain Chris Read and all-rounder Graeme Swann at the crease, however, they have not only seen off that threat but left Yorkshire skipper Gough wondering what to do to stop them overhauling his own side's total.

Certainly, Goughie himself does not look likely to be the answer. Having been swatted over mid-wicket for six by Swann and then driven for three fours in one over by Read, he wisely took himself off.

Gough has tried alternating Rashid with Morkel at the Kirkstall Lane end, with Matthew Hoggard taking over from Anthony McGrath at the football stand end but though Morkel had Swann hopping about after hitting him on the foot - which will have cheered up Rashid a little after his fellow spinner twice hit him over the top for six - there have been few signs of an impending breakthrough.

Read and Swann both have half-centuries and their partnership is currently worth 118.
