From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

England spinner Graeme Swann remains confident the hosts can win the second npower Ashes Test despite Australia's stubborn resistance today.

Michael Clarke and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin combined superbly after the tourists were reduced to 128 for five and when bad light stopped play, Australia were 313 for five, having been set an unlikely 522-run target.

Swann expects England to still press home their advantage but admitted they could do with making early inroads in the morning.

"It would be nice if Fred (Andrew Flintoff) did get a couple of early wickets but I have a feeling I'm going to have some part to play tomorrow," Swann told Sky Sports News.

"We've still got to get five wickets and we've got to get these two out, first and foremost. We've still got that new ball, so I probably won't be used in the morning.

"But I'll be ready whenever Straussy wants me."

Swann admits it would be a terrific achievement for Australia to complete such a turnaround.

"I think we're going to win, yes," he said.

"It's a massive chase and if they manage to get 500 then fair play to them. But I still think we're favourites."
