Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Kent, second in the County Championship and needing a win to keep the pressure on Surrey, reduced Leicestershire to 240 for 9 on the first day at Canterbury. Martin Saggers took 3 for 57 but the opener Iain Sutcliffe, who hit 119 not out, forged a series of stands, notably 64 for the sixth wicket with Rob Cunliffe for Leicestershire.

Sussex were grateful for Murray Goodwin's 87 and Tim Ambrose's 60 as they amassed 240 in their first innings against Lancashire at Hove. Glen Chapple (4 for 61) claimed two quick wickets before Goodwin put on 84 for the third wicket with Chris Adams and then added a further 98 with Ambrose.

Peter Martin, 3 for 45, and Chris Schofield, 3 for 21, ensured the last five home wickets fell for just 11 runs, before Lancashire finished the day on 116 for 1.

Warwickshire's Nick Knight fell two runs short of his century at Taunton, as the visitors made 304 in reply to Somerset's 408 all out. Ian Bell made 31 and Neil Smith contributed 39 for Warwickshire. The hosts were 38 without loss at the close of play.
