The 22-year-old won the Bradman award at the Baggy Greens' annual awards ceremony.
There were fears Abbott wouldn't play again after his delivery struck his fellow countryman Hughes on the neck during a domestic game, leading to the international batsman's death.
However, Abbott has been back in action for New South Wales since, recording his best ever performance in his first match back, including six wickets for just 14 runs against Queensland.
On learning of his award he thanked "the Australian cricket family and wider community".
He also expressed gratitude for the support of his "family, close friends and team-mates, and especially girlfriend Brier".
Steve Smith was named both Test and one-day player of the year at the ceremony.
