Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Disciplined bowling from Nottinghamshire limited Durham to 88 for 1 before the weather forced the first day's play to be abandoned at 4.45pm at Trent Bridge.

Only 37.5 overs were possible, during which the left-armer Ryan Sidebottom conceded 20 runs from his 11 overs while the all-rounder Mark Ealham bowled five maidens in his eight-over spell.

Paul Franks took the only wicket, capturing the Australian opener Jimmy Maher, who made 33 including five boundaries, with Gordon Muchall (12 not out) joining Jonathan Lewis (36no) in the middle.

In Second Division, Scott Newman hit 65 - his fifth half-century of the Championship season - for Surrey between the showers on the first day of the match against Worcestershire. Only 38.4 overs were possible at the Oval with the home side ending the day on 126 without loss.

There was also wet weather at the County Ground, where Derbyshire were looking to secure their first Championship win at home in close to three years.

The Tasmanian Michael Di Venuto hit 90 out of 132 without loss before lunch against Leicestershire. They were unable to build on that before the rain stopped play at 4.30pm.
