Patel, who was overlooked by England for the ICC Champions Trophy, scored an undefeated 129 as his side reached their victory target of 239 with five balls remaining at Trent Bridge.
Elsewhere in Group A, Steven Crook's three wickets in 11 balls helped to lift Northamptonshire to second after a 63-run win over Sussex at Arundel.
The Netherlands celebrated their first YB40 win of the season after beating Worcestershire by six wickets in a rain-affected match at New Road. With the game reduced to 18 overs a side, the visitors reached their 91-run target in gloomy conditions with 14 balls to spare.
It was Worcestershire's third consecutive home defeat against the Netherlands, who gained sweet revenge for their 44-run reversal at the hands of the same opponents in Rotterdam earlier this month.
In Group B, Durham bowled Scotland out for 91 before wrapping up a seven-wicket triumph at Chester-le-Street. A seventh straight defeat means the visitors' miserable form in the competition continued. Durham needed just 12.5 overs to wrap this one up as five Scotland batsman went for ducks. The captain, Preston Mommsen, and ex-Warwickshire player Calum MacLeod both went first ball and the only resistance came from New Zealander Tom Latham, who made 30.
Simon Katich and Glen Chapple put Essex to the sword once more as Lancashire won by 64 runs at Chelmsford. Both players figured prominently in their side's County Championship victory on the same ground last week and they were at the forefront once again.
Put into bat, Lancashire reached 230 for 8, with Katich making 60, before they dismissed the hosts for 166 in 34.3 overs, with Essex losing their last four wickets in eight balls for three runs.
Chapple, who had taken 5 for 9 in Essex's humiliation when they were dismissed for 20 last week, took 3 for 33 including the vital scalp of Owais Shah on 42 who was beginning to pose a serious threat.
In Group C, Gloucestershire beat Yorkshire by 36 runs in a rain-shortened fixture at Bristol and maintained pressure on their arch-rivals Somerset at the top of the group.
Chris Dent top-scored with 56 and there were useful contributions from Michael Klinger (45) and Ian Cockbain (46 not out) as the home side posted an imposing 229 for 6 in 27 overs after being put in.
Somerset's Craig Meschede took his wicket tally in this season's competition to 20 as his side retained the Group C leadership with a five-wicket victory over Leicestershire at Taunton.
The 21-year-old all-rounder confirmed his position as the leading wicket-taker in the YB40 by claiming 4 for 5 from his five overs as the visitors were restricted to 124 all out after losing the toss in a match reduced to 25 overs a side by rain.
