From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Paul Farbrace, effectively England’s caretaker coach, hands over the reins to incoming head coach Trevor Bayliss this week with a burgeoning feelgood factor around the national team confirmed by a dramatic 3-2 one-day series victory over New Zealand.
Speaking in Durham after Jonny Bairstow had rescued England from 40 for 4 to reach their 192 target, Farbrace said Bayliss will inherit a confident mood as he takes his new charges to Spain for a four-day get training camp. “To get over the line and win a game like we did today gives you belief and that is something every player needs to win tight games like that,” Farbrace said. “Then you believe you’re capable of beating anybody.
“Trev’s coming in at a good time. Let’s make no mistake, the Australia series is going to be a tough series but Trev’s coming in with a feelgood factor around England. The publicly have massively got behind this team during the one-day series. You could really feel the push in the crowd when Bairstow and [Sam] Billings got together.
“It will be tough for Trevor coming in. But he’s someone who will fit into what we’re doing rather than re-write everything, because he’s not that sort of person.”
Farbrace said the most important factor in Spain will be Bayliss getting to know players personally, “rather than turning up in Cardiff on the Saturday before the Ashes and shaking a few hands”.
Of the one-day series, Farbrace added: “The key was that we had the opportunity to get some players ready for the Ashes series and it gave others opportunities to come in. What it has done is widen our pool of players.”
