Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Pakistan had started the fourth day needing only 97 to overhaul Sri Lanka's target of 168 and with eight wickets in hand, but were undone by superb spells from left-arm paceman Thilan Thushara and left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.
The two produced an astonishing turnaround with two wickets apiece in quick succession which left Pakistan, 71 for 2 overnight, reeling at 80 for 6 within the first seven overs of the day.
Ajantha Mendis then chipped away with two tail-end wickets, while Herath added two more victims to finish with figures of 4 for 15 from 11.3 overs as Pakistan were bowled out for 117 just before the lunch interval. Thushara had begun proceedings with an impeccable first over, and he laid bare Pakistan's middle order with two wickets in the first over from the other end.
Mohammad Yousuf, who had scored a century in the first innings, was removed off the first ball from Herath, trapped in front while playing down the wrong line. Salman Butt succumbed two deliveries later and Sri Lanka built on the momentum, their dominance underlined when Misbah-ul Haq was brilliantly run out by Dilshan for seven.
