From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

England pace bowler Graham Onions took five for 38 on his debut to help send West Indies tumbling to 152 all out in their first innings on the second day of the first test at Lord's.

England, dismissed for 377 after resuming the day on 289 for seven, enforced the follow-on with a minimum 31 overs remaining.

Onions, who took three wickets in an over and five in 27 balls, was ably supported by off-spinner Graeme Swann who claimed two wickets with consecutive balls after striking 63 from 89 balls, his maiden test fifty.

West Indies made a bright start, reaching 46 within nine overs, before Stuart Broad bowled captain Chris Gayle for 28 from 34 balls including six fours.

His fellow opener Devon Smith was the only batsman to offer any resistance, reaching 46 before he was bowled by Swann.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was caught at slip by Paul Collingwood off Swann's next delivery and the same combination accounted for Brendan Nash for four.

West Indies duly followed on and things didn't get much better for the visiting side, closing the day on 39 for the loss of two wickets.

James Anderson took both wickets during the second innings, taking out opener Gayle and Sarwan before stumps.
