England national selector Geoff Miller has backed Michael Vaughan to bounce back from his omission from the 16-man squad Test squad to tour the West Indies that was announced today.

Vaughan has not played for England since he resigned as captain in August and had been hoping to be included for the upcoming tour of the Caribbean, which begins next month.

Miller, along with the rest of the England selectors, decided to overlook the 34-year-old for this tour but insists the door is still open for Vaughan providing that he can prove his form for Yorkshire in their pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi.

"I know Mike (Vaughan) and I know what he is capable of doing so I'm sure he'll be putting the pressure on the selectors to get back into the side," Miller told BBC Radio Five Live.

"I have no doubt at all that when the early season comes round he will be ready and prepared and he'll be knocking runs and putting pressure on us.

"That's what we'll be looking forward to. We like to have pressure put on us for selection."

England will play four Tests and five one-day internationals against the West Indies before returning to the UK to play their Caribbean counterparts ahead of the Ashes series, which begins in July.

Miller awarded Vaughan a central contract in September and he believes the opener's experience could be useful with such a busy year ahead for the team.

"He will keep on earning his keep by getting ready to play for England," Miller added.

"The reason he was given a central contract is that there is a big year in front of him, he needs to be playing.

"There is a lot of cricket to be played and we didn't want to lose that experience.

"He feels in a position to get himself prepared both physically and mentally for the season and to make himself available for selection in the early part of the season."

Yorkshire's Adil Rashid has been included in the squad and Miller believes the all-rounder has many assets that will help England should he get the nod to play.

"The art of selection is not to pick too early or leave it too late and we have been looking at him (Rashid) for a while," Miller told Sky Sports News.

"We have talked to people who like him, like Geoff Boycott and to players who have faced him and we believe this is the right time for him."

"He has done very well for Yorkshire and he brings leg spin to the squad, he's good in the field and has batting ability.

"We'll find out if he's good enough and whether he'll fit in."

Ian Bell has struggled for form this winter and it had been reported that the batsman would be rested ahead of the Ashes, but Miller insisted that the 26-year-old had been selected on merit.

"You don't become a bad player overnight," said Miller.

"He's had a little battle with runs this winter but knowing him, I'm sure he'll rectify that very quickly."

When asked whether Bell or Owais Shah would be the most likely to start the first Test at number three, Miller said: "That's up to the captain and coach.

"They make the decisions and they will see how they perform in the nets and we'll take it from there."
