Your support makes all the difference.Mick Newell is relishing the chance to play his part in "shaping the future direction of the England cricket team" after succeeding Ashley Giles as a national selector. It was announced on Friday evening that Giles had opted to stand down from his role with the four-man panel, one week after losing out on becoming head coach of the national side to Peter Moores.
Giles, who lost his job as England's limited-overs coach as a result of Moores' appointment across all three formats, had been part of the selection panel since 2008 but clearly felt he was unable to continue in his role alongside Moores, the chairman of selectors, James Whitaker, and Angus Fraser.
In his place comes Newell, Nottinghamshire's director of cricket, who led the county to the Yorkshire Bank 40 title last season and has been part of the coaching staff on tours with the England Lions and Under-19 sides in the past.
"It's a tremendous privilege and a great honour to be invited to join the England selection panel and I am really looking forward to working more closely with James, Peter and Angus," Newell said.
"I would also like to thank Nottinghamshire CCC for their support in allowing me to take on this role and play a part in shaping the future direction of the England team."
Newell, who was also in the running with Moores and Giles for one of the highest-profile jobs in English cricket, takes up his new role with immediate effect but will retain his position at Nottinghamshire, which he has held since 2002.
Whitaker said: "We welcome Mick to the panel, and his passion, cricketing knowledge and in-depth understanding of our county game will be invaluable as we seek to identify potential international talent and develop outstanding England teams across all three formats of the game."
Whitaker was also quick to pay tribute to Newell's predecessor Giles, saying: "I would like to thank him for all his hard work and dedication to the England cause over the past six years, both as a selector and more recently as our limited-overs coach."
