Sri Lanka were always up against it after being set 436 runs to win when India declared on 375 for 6 - with Yuvraj Singh unbeaten on 77 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 51 not out - but a second-wicket stand of 79 between Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara at least looked to put them in with a chance of salvaging a draw.
That partnership took Sri Lanka up to 109 for 1 but a late collapse left them on 123 for 5 by stumps.
Anil Kumble, who took all four wickets to fall in the final session on day two, was again the chief destroyer with the dismissals of Atapattu for 67 and Malinga Bandara for a duck.
His fellow spinner Harbhajan Singh weighed in with the wicket of Thilan Samaraweera for a duck - off the day's final ball - after paceman Ajit Agarkar had started the slide with the wicket of Sangakkara for 33.
