Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Gary Kirsten batted himself into the record books by becoming the first player to score centuries against every Test-playing nation as South Africa ran amok on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh here yesterday.
Having dropped down one place from his usual opener's position, Kirsten (113 not out) shared a second-wicket stand of 272 with Graeme Smith, who smashed 200 to record his highest first-class score.
In his third Test, Smith showed maturity beyond his 21 years as he reached 200 before falling just before the close, becoming Sanwar Hossain's first Test wicket. Smith's previous best first-class score was 187 while his Test-best was 68 against Australia in Cape Town.
Bangladesh had little answer to South Africa's batting as Smith, Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs helped themselves. Khaled Mashud put South Africa into bat, but Gibbs and Smith rattled up a 50 partnership before Gibbs played a rash shot against Tapash Baisya to get out.
Kirsten came in and bar one Chinese cut looked in control as he cruised to his 15th Test century.
