Hosts India bundled out Pakistan for 191 in 42.5 overs before quickly chasing down their target to win a World Cup blockbuster between the Asian arch-rivals at a heaving Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.

Put in to bat, Pakistan were on 155-2 in the 30th over and appeared to be cruising towards a 300-plus total with skipper Babar Azam (50) and in-form batter Mohammad Rizwan (49) at the crease. But India’s Mohammed Siraj then dismissed Babar, triggering a spectacular collapse, with Pakistan unable to hold out for the rest of their quota of 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 2-19 in a clinical display of his distinctive style of seam bowling.

Rohit Sharma then fired 86 from 63 balls en route to a quick win, as India extended their record to three from three. Get the latest Cricket World Cup odds here.

Rohit Sharma sets extraordinary record in World Cup match

India captain Rohit Sharma has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar in most centuries scored in a cricket world cup.

The batter claimed the record during India’s eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday amid the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 tournament.

Sharma scored 131 runs in 84 balls for India in the team’s successful chase of 273 against Afghanistan. The latest knock was a record-breaking outing for Sharma that marked his seventh century in a cricket world cup – one more than Tendulkar. He also beat Chris Gayle’s record of most sixes in international cricket.

The Indian captain was crowned the Player of the Match for his achievements.

Stoinis and Australia left fuming after controversial dismissal against South Africa

Marcus Stoinis was given out in controversial fashion as Australia headed for a second successive defeat in the Cricket World Cup against South Africa in Lucknow.

Pat Cummins’ side had already slid to 70 for five in their chase of 312 when Stoinis was given out caught behind.

Both the batter and his partner at the other end, Marnus Labuschagne, were left unhappy with the decision from the third umpire.

Stoinis had been given not out by the on-field umpire as the Proteas appealed. Quinton de Kock, behind the stumps, shrugged his shoulders, but Temba Bavuma decided to send the call upstairs.

Pakistani cricket presenter Zainab Abbas breaks silence after World Cup exit

Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas has apologised over historic tweets after her controversial exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, while dismissing rumours that she was deported from India.

Abbas admitted that the backlash in India to some of her historic social media posts was a factor in her leaving the country, saying she “felt intimidated and scared” by the growing furore online.

The presenter’s name become one of the most discussed phrases around the World Cup in the early stages of the tournament after users discovered old posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, which some said were “derogatory and provocative” towards India.

Pakistan journalists and fans to be given visas ahead of ICC Cricket World Cup match against India

A top official of the Pakistan Cricket Board will travel to India on Thursday after getting assurances that his country’s journalists and fans will get visas for the Cricket World Cup.

Zaka Ashraf, chairman of the PCB management committee, will watch the marquee game between Pakistan and India in Ahmedabad on Saturday at the 134,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium.

“I am travelling tomorrow after receiving confirmation that our journalists have been asked to submit their passports (at the Indian High Commission) for the mega event,” Ashraf told reporters in Lahore on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the PCB said it was “extremely disappointed” that visas had been delayed for Pakistani journalists and fans, asking both the International Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India to expedite the process.

Rohit Sharma’s individual brilliance shows just how dangerous India can be

World Cup hosts India cantered to their second successive win of the tournament after captain Rohit Sharma’s incendiary century set up their eight-wicket thrashing of Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Rohit belted 131 off 84 balls, clobbering five sixes and 16 fours, as twice champions India chased down a 273-run victory target with 15 overs to spare at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Virat Kohli made 55 not out, sealing the easy win with a boundary as the tournament hosts maintained their red-hot form ahead of Saturday’s much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

Cricket World Cup points table explained

India aren’t at the top of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 points table despite not having lost a match yet – similar to Pakistan and New Zealand.

They scored their latest thumping eight-wicket victory over Afghanistan on Wednesday as captain Rohit Sharma led India with a match-winning knock of 131 off 84 balls, with 15 overs to spare, at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The win marked the team’s second consecutive match victory as well as a fantastic net run rate of + 1.500 – but the hosts are still not at the top of the points table in the ongoing tournament.

England ready for challenge of knocking India ‘off their perch’ – Chris Woakes

Chris Woakes believes home advantage stacks the odds in India’s favour at the World Cup but insists his England side are motivated to “knock them off their perch”.

The last three editions of the tournament have all gone the way of the host nations, with India lifting their last global title in Mumbai in 2011, followed by Australia in Melbourne in 2015 and England at Lord’s four years ago.

India have done little to reduce their status as pre-competition favourites, kicking off their campaign with heavy wins over Afghanistan and Australia, while Asian rivals Pakistan also have two wins from two.

Shubman Gill will ‘definitely’ play in India vs Pakistan World Cup match, says former selector

India batter Shubman Gill will “definitely” play against Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Saturday, according to India’s former chief selector MSK Prasad.

Gill’s quick recovery from a fever has thrown him right in contention for India’s upcoming big match against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The young batter flew to Ahmedabad from Chennai on Wednesday after getting discharged from hospital.

“I think we can put an end to all kinds of speculations. Shubman Gill will definitely play this game (vs Pakistan). He’s too good a player to miss out. He had just a fever. He has recovered,” Prasad told The Hindustan Times.

There had been rumours that Gill’s fever may have been dengue, but that was never confirmed by the Indian management.
