From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

India secured a crushing innings and 144-run win over Sri Lanka yesterday in the second Test at Kanpur to take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.

Following on, Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for 229 in their first innings in reply to India's 642, were skittled out for 269. Thilan Samaraweera fought bravely but India's spinners achieved victory in the afternoon session to leave him stranded on 78. Harbhajan Singh took 3 for 98.

West Indies' top order collapsed on day two of the first Test against Australia in Brisbane. The tourists, replying to Australia's 480 for 8 declared, slipped from 49 without loss to 63 for 4 and closed on 134 for 5.

Four wickets for Mohammad Asif left the first Test between New Zealand and Pakistan finely poised heading into the final day in Dunedin. Asif took 4 for 41 as New Zealand collapsed to 147 for 8 – a lead of 244 – after bowling out Pakistan for 332.
