Hildreth ton establishes Somerset dominance
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.James Hildreth already has experience of an Ashes Test – he caught Ricky Ponting as a substitute fielder three years ago – and he may yet earn more direct involvement next summer. Yesterday he added another century to a lengthening list to steer Somerset to a commanding 399 for 3 against champions Sussex in the First Division of the Championship at Taunton.
The 23-year-old, who numbers his captain Justin Langer among his admirers, finished unbeaten on 127 after Sussex captain Chris Adams had won the toss and put the home side in. Marcus Trescothick made 74 and Neil Edwards 99 before he was run out by Adams from slip.
Michael Di Venuto registered the day's highest score, reaching an undefeated 184 in Durham's 337 for 6 against Yorkshire at Chester-le-Street.
In the Second Division, Steve Snell scored his maiden first-class century – 127 not out –as Gloucestershire made 411 for 6 against Worcestershire at New Road.
