From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The first Test between Pakistan and Australia will go into a fifth and final day here today after heavy rain during the tea interval forced the early close of day four. For the second successive day the final session was wiped out, meaning an enthralling match will go the distance.

Pakistan hold the edge, closing at 179 for 3 in their second innings, requiring another 137 runs to win, but it was a day of contrasting fortunes. Waqar Younis's men dominated the opening session before Australia hit back after lunch to renew their hopes.

Pakistan appeared in control after reaching the first interval on 103 for 1 shortly after the resumption when Abdul Razzaq misjudged a straight ball from Shane Warne and Steve Bucknor adjudged him leg-before.

Taufeeq Umar continued where he left off in the morning session as he and Younis Khan brought up the 50-partnership. The 21-year-old did have one lucky escape when surviving a confident lbw shout from the impressive Warne, but his luck ran out when 12 runs short of his second Test century, although his dismissal did owe a lot to the agility of Mark Waugh. Umar cut at a wide ball from Brett Lee but as it appeared to be heading towards the boundary, Waugh reached out and took a brilliant catch over his head.

Earlier in the day, Imran Nazir (40) and Taufeeq put on a stand of 91 for the first wicket. After surviving lbw appeals from Gillespie and Warne, Imran was also let off by Adam Gilchrist when the keeper missed a stumping chance, again off the unfortunate Warne.

The wasted opportunity seemed to irritate Gilchrist, whose vocal utterings from behind the stumps grew louder. Loud enough indeed for Imran to complain to the umpires.

Imran was then struck on the helmet by Lee and after receiving medical treatment he carried on. Moments later, and clearly unnerved, he drove Warne high to mid-off where Glenn McGrath held a well-judged catch.
