Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Essex wicketkeeper, Jamie Foster, will play his maiden senior match for England, the Sussex seamer James Kirtley and Matthew Hoggard, of Yorkshire, will form their new-ball attack, while Gloucestershire's Jeremy Snape completes the list of debutants.
The Surrey batsman Mark Ramprakash also earns a place in the starting line-up ahead of his former Middlesex team-mate Owais Shah, who impressed during the disappointing NatWest Triangular series against Australia and Pakistan during the summer.
Ramprakash will go in at No 4, ahead of the established middle-order partnership of Graham Thorpe and Andrew Flintoff, with Ben Hollioake at No 7 – the position he filled successfully during the summer.
England have also decided to stick with the opening pair of Marcus Trescothick, the only player to feature in all 11 of their successive defeats over the last year, and Nick Knight, while the captain, Nasser Hussain, will bat at No 3.
Neil McKenzie praised Zimbabwe's bowlers after guiding South Africa to a six-wicket win with nine overs to spare in the third one-day international yesterday. McKenzie scored 69 not out, including 11 fours, as South Africa totalled 188 for four in 41 overs replying to Zimbabwe's mediocre 184 for 6.
"It wasn't an easy track and I think the Zimbabwe bowlers used it quite nicely," McKenzie said. "Zimbabwe are quite effective in that they bowl slower balls and cutters and that sort of stuff. So you struggle to score and it's not like you're going to bash them through the covers too often."
The result gave South Africa a 3-0 series win to go with their 1-0 win in the two-Test series.
McKenzie and Justin Ontong, who made 32, put the innings back on track with a fourth-wicket stand of 64 after South Africa had lost three wickets in the space of 15 balls and been reduced to 67 for 3.
