The England rugby team were among the millions of people up and down the country gripped by the Cricket World Cup final as their fellow international sportsmen beat New Zealand in a dramatic super-over victory.

England’s rugby union squad are currently on a training camp ahead of their own World Cup campaign, which begins in September in Japan, and they too will hope to be crowned the world champions in the final on 2 November.

England won only by way of having hit more boundaries during the day’s play than New Zealand, after scores were tied in both the regular match and the super-over.

And there was some controversy as England were awarded runs in a bizarre incident in the final over of their innings which saw the ball ricochet of Ben Stokes’s bat as he ran between the wickets and down to the boundary for extra runs.
