England suffered a shock 14-run defeat against Pakistan, their first loss in the World Cup.

Eoin Morgan’s side were woeful in the field and found themselves chasing 348 after putting Pakistan into bat at Trent Bridge, requiring a World Cup record to go one better than Sarfaraz Ahmed’s men and take the two points on offer.

England's military fielding was absent throughout, typified when Jason Roy, usually so good, dropped Mohammad Hafeez on 14 before he went on to make 84

Jos Buttler and Joe Root both got centuries, but Roy, Ben Stokes and Morgan all went for less than 15 as Jonny Bairstow mustered just 32.

After being costly in the field, England gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Root and Buttler threatened to make history, but from the moment they got out it was clear this was Pakistan’s day.

Pakistan ended their run of 11 successive defeats and recovered following a mauling against West Indies at this ground a few days ago, showed real skill in every area and announced themselves as contenders at this tournament.

Things may get worse for England as Morgan faces potential disciplinary action for a slow over rate after their innings in the field ended 20 minutes late.
