Yorkshire face a battle to avoid defeat after Derbyshire continued to control the Second Division match at Headingley yesterday.

The visitors never let slip the advantage gained in the first session when they clinically wrapped up the Yorkshire innings, and then batted quickly to reach 214 for 4 before setting an improbable 407 for victory.

Matthew Wood and Michael Vaughan negotiated an awkward nine-over spell to reach 12 without loss by the close.

A stoppage of 74 minutes for rain hardly helped Derbyshire's cause, but they remain favourites to claim what would be only their ninth win in a century of visits to Yorkshire.
